When one is out of the house or the city, and is adventuring on the wilderness, especially if it takes more than a day or two and the environment is unpredictable and new, one has to think well of how he must survive it, it doesn’t only mean that one has to prepare all the survival kits and tools, but a major thing to be considered also is the food. How does one survive without food on these trips? Some would choose to have the easy-to-prepare and easy-to-eat food while others choose to go for backpacking cooking.
Backpacking cooking would not be the regular household style or the typical cooking that people are used to. Backpacking cooking would entail one’s wits, patience, and the right ingredients or food, but it is an easy style of cooking because most of these foods only need heat or water or other chemical components. Backpacking cooking would be convenient for backpackers who don’t want to take so much time preparing the meals especially in the wilderness or sites that are difficult to find materials and ingredients.
Backpacking cooking doesn’t literally mean cooking in the usual sense of the word, but rather, backpacking cooking is the process of food preparation when one is in the backcountry or in an exploration and expedition in the wild. Some of these backpacking cooking that one can choose from would be: pre-cooked food that can be eaten hot, freeze-dried food that can be reconstituted by adding hot water, UHT-food that can be reheated with a special water-activated chemical heater, and other varieties of backpacking cooking.
There are also specialized cookbooks on backpacking cooking or backcountry style of cooking and preparing meals. Some of these backpacking cooking books are good for short trips and some are for long trips or extended outings and some are even good for campfire activities.
What is really important in backpacking cooking is that you have to know what you want to bring into the wild and the time to prepare it, but it must not compromise your energy and health. Backpacking cooking may be difficult for some especially if they arent used to doing this type of meal preparation, but once they try it, it would truly be a fun and exciting way to have a meal in a naturally beautiful open-air environment. It may not be the typical cooking, but it sure is an enjoyable and convenient way to prepare and eat a meal.
